Your Support Matters
Presentation of the Accessible Garden
At Mossel Bay APD’s Mooiuitsig Adult Day Care Centre in Wolwedans, care is about more than meeting daily needs. It is about creating opportunities for adults with severe and profound disabilities to learn, participate, create and feel that they belong.
The centre provides a safe and supportive environment where each participant is encouraged to develop at their own pace. Through care, stimulation, training and meaningful activities, participants are given opportunities to build confidence, maintain physical well-being and experience the satisfaction of being involved.
Mooiuitsig also provides important support to families and caregivers by offering day care and respite care, knowing that their loved ones are receiving individual attention in a caring environment.
One example of the abilities being nurtured at the centre is Anthena, one of our participants, who creates beautiful handmade items such as aprons and washing-line peg bags. There are plans to make some of her creations available for sale at local markets, creating an opportunity for her skills to be recognised while potentially generating an income from her work.
We have a vision for an accessible vegetable and creative garden at Mooiuitsig — and we need the community’s help to make it a reality.
The garden will allow participants to plant, care for and harvest vegetables and herbs using raised beds designed to make gardening more accessible. It will provide practical opportunities to learn skills, follow routines, work together and experience the pride of growing something themselves.
To get started, we are appealing to local businesses, organisations and community members for support with recycled pallets, soil, compost, seedlings, plants, gardening tools and other suitable materials. Practical assistance with setting up the garden would also be greatly appreciated.
With the community’s support, we can transform an unused space into a garden where adults with disabilities can actively participate, develop skills and contribute — creating a meaningful space for connection and belonging at Mooiuitsig.
Can you help us make the Mooiuitsig accessible garden a reality? We would love to hear from you.
